Presentation: 30/06/2007 - Code for the Country Day - WPF
Early last Saturday morning I woke up at 4AM, packed my bag, and headed to the airport to deliver the Code for the Country day session in Melbourne. Although I was relatively unprepared for the session (having only prepared the content the night before) I believe it went rather well. A special thanks to the following people:
- Niall Ginsbourg, for supporting me on the day and delivering some great talks on Animation and 3D. Niall knows 3D WPF better than I know 2D WPF and I thought he did a great job.
- Deepak, Chuck and Joseph for organising the event and delivering it in the other states.
- Yann Duran, for kindly giving me a lift back to the airport when I was worried I might not get there in time for my flight.
- New Horizons for hosting us (and for the free pizza for lunch on the day! :))
- Everyone who came along on the day to make the course a success
Here’s the sample application that I used a few times during the course:
- WPFSampleApplication.zip (6.49 MB)
And some of the links I mentioned:
- WPF Performance Q&A - Information on retained scene rendering versus immediate mode graphics
- WPF 2D and 3D performance
- My WPF Validation article
- My XAML and WPF Coding Guidelines
- XBAP Sandbox information
- Getting Ink working in WPF
As Chuck mentioned, we raised $5,000 in pledges towards drought relief. Now, I’m no expert, but I’ve noticed a lot of rain in NSW an Victoria recently, most of which began during the lead up to this training day. Is it merely a coincidence that the drought may have begun to end around the same time as we began to try to raise awareness of it? I’ll leave that to you to decide
UPDATE: Oh, if you’re in Sydney on Thursday 5th July, come on over to the SDNUG to heckle me during my Binding Oriented Programming talk.

thanks mate; good talk. didn’t get a chance to tell you afterwards. bit disappointed i won’t be working with you guys. obviously annoyed the wrong people
Thanks for the sample app. It’ll be handy for those “what did Paul do??” moments
And thanks for the training day, it was a tops introduction to XAML. I was a bit iffy about attending a hands on training day with a broken wrist but it was well worth it!
Thanks for including the sample app. I have to say you did a fantastic job at the presentation, really smooth. The bamboo is really cool since I dont have a tablet pc.
cheers

actually i had a question i forgot to ask;
are the windows limited to the standard windows dressing (bar, square, _ [] x) or can they be transparent as per winamp and friends?
i’d think maybe because i’ts activex you can’t do that with wpf.
@michael
I seem to recall one of the presenters at Remix (Lee from Frog?) saying that custom chrome was possible, but performance is fairly sucky at the moment. I believe he said that they generally tell clients “no, not possible” to avoid arguments
